What Is SEER2? (And What Rating You Actually Need)
SEER2 is the miles-per-gallon of air conditioning. Here's what the number means and which tier pays off in our climate.

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures how much cooling a system delivers per unit of electricity across a whole cooling season. The higher the number, the less it costs to run. SEER2 replaced the older SEER rating in 2023 using a tougher, more realistic test — so a SEER2 number is a few points lower than the old SEER number for the same equipment.
What the tiers mean
- 14.3 SEER2 — the current federal minimum in the South. Lowest upfront cost.
- 15–17 SEER2 — the value sweet spot for most Texas homes.
- 18–20+ SEER2 — premium, variable-speed comfort and the lowest bills.
Which tier is worth it here?
Because our cooling season runs roughly April through October, efficiency upgrades pay back faster in Central Texas than in milder climates. For a home that runs the AC hard all summer, stepping up from minimum to mid-tier usually pencils out; the jump to premium makes the most sense if you value quiet, even temperatures and plan to stay in the home. Higher tiers usually pair with variable-speed equipment. Compare the options in our SEER2 tiers guide.
