How to Fix Hot & Cold Spots in Your Home

Uneven temperatures usually mean an airflow, duct, or sizing problem — not a thermostat you need to baby. Here's how to fix them.

Rooms that never match the thermostat are almost always a sign of an airflow, ductwork, or sizing problem — not something you should have to manage by closing vents and hoping.

Common causes

  • Leaky, undersized, or poorly designed ductwork.
  • An oversized or undersized system.
  • No zoning in a multi-level or sprawling layout.
  • Blocked returns or a dirty filter restricting airflow.

The fixes that work

We start by measuring airflow and inspecting ducts, then match the fix to the cause: sealing and balancing ducts, adding a return, installing zoning, or — for a room ducts can't reach — a ductless mini-split. Chasing comfort by buying a bigger system usually backfires; the answer is almost always airflow and design.
